Nick Punto's Dark Secret?
A post just hit The Hardball Times about the Sidney Ponson case. In short, the Orioles refused to pay him the last $11M on his contract because he gained dozens of pounds, was always drunk, punched a judge, et cetera. Also, he sucked.
(The Twins missed that last bit, and idiotically signed him anyway. At least he never punched a judge when he was in Minnesota. He might have eaten one though.)
Ponson and his lawyers want the money. They'll probably get it. Calcaterra makes a good point about the precedent that would set:
And what of the "high standards of personal conduct?" Quick: can the Yankees cut A-Rod for messing around with that stripper? What if instead of a stripper it was a prostitute? What if a utility infielder in Minnesota was messing with a prostitute, but didn't have his dalliances splashed on the front page of the New York Post? Is the clause aimed at bad behavior or just bad publicity?
I have just one question about this.
What does Craig Calcaterra know about Nick Punto that we don't?
